Relaxing Hot Springs at Manby near Taos, New Mexico
Manby Hot Springs offers a captivating natural retreat just outside Taos, New Mexico. Located along the scenic Rio Grande Gorge, this spot is prized for its warm, mineral-rich pools formed naturally in rocky basins beside the river. These springs stand out in northern New Mexico as rare geothermal features amid a rugged volcanic landscape. Visitors are attracted both for the soothing waters and the stunning views of steep canyon walls and the flowing Rio Grande below.
The springs rest on volcanic rock layers, creating small pools where temperatures reach around 101°F, ideal for soaking after hiking. The area surrounding the springs supports a variety of plant life adapted to the riparian environment and volcanic soil. Wildlife including bighorn sheep and songbirds are frequently observed near the water's edge, adding a touch of wilderness to the visit. The pools are close enough to the river that during high water some may be submerged, highlighting the dynamic nature of the location.
Historically, the springs carry the name of Arthur Manby, a 19th-century figure known for promoting the healing qualities of these thermal waters. Access to Manby Hot Springs involves navigating a moderately difficult trail with rocky terrain and occasional poison ivy patches, making it an adventure for those prepared. The route also allows glimpses of local flora and fauna while following the Rio Grande’s edge.
Visitors appreciate Manby Hot Springs for its combination of natural warmth, remote beauty, and outdoor challenge, making it a special destination for soaking, relaxing, and enjoying northern New Mexico’s distinctive river canyon environment.
